Paul Joseph Morawiec, 80, of 1 McKinley St. Adams, died Monday afternoon at North Adams Regional Hospital following a short illness. He was born in Adams on December 18, 1923, son of the late Joseph and Julia (Struzik) Morawiec, and attended Adams schools. He received his equivalency diploma from Drury High School in North Adams in 1966. Mr. Morawiec was a Veteran of World War II. He entered the US Navy on February 27, 1942. After receiving amphibious training, he was assigned to USS LST 521. He served in the European Theater and saw action in the Normandy Invasion on D-Day at Omaha Beach, and participated in the shuttling of supplies from England to all five involved beachheads. He received the European Theater Ribbon with star, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was Honorably Discharged as a Petty Officer second Class on April 7, 1946. Upon his return from military service, Mr. Morawiec worked as a welder in the Maintenance Dept. at the former Dewey & Almy Chemical Co., later WR Grace Co., in Adams, and had received his expert certification in welding from the American Welding Society. He retired in 1988 after 42 years of service. He was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams. He was a life member of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Society, The Polish National Alliance, Adams Post 160 American Legion, Dr. George L. Curran Post 996 Veterans of Foreign Wars, North Adams; the National Rifle Association and and the W. R. Grace Quarter Century Club. He enjoyed fly fishing, hunting, hiking, mushrooming and reading. His wife, the former Helen Adamczyk, whom he married on June 25, 1949, died on November 4, 2001. He is survived by 4 Sisters - Monica LaRue of Manchester, Vermont; Frances Ordyna of Adams; Cecelia Ingrassia of Long Island, New York; and Helen Ragan of Pittsfield, MA; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces & grandnephews. His brother, Casimer "Casey" Morawiec, died in 1975. The funeral will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM from the Auge`-Paciorek-Simmons Funeral Home, 13 Hoosac St. Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 12:00 Noon in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams, celebrated by Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, Pastor of the Parishes of St. Stanislaus Kostka and Notre Dame & St. Thomas Aquinas. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours are Friday from 4 to 7 PM at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to St. Stanislaus Kostka Church or to the Adams Free Library through the funeral home.
