Mr. John S. Babula, 77, of 2028 Small Town Drive, New Braunfels, Texas, a native and longtime resident of Adams and local high school teacher, died early Friday morning at his home. He was born in Adams on September 4, 1928, a son of the late Roman and Mary (Adamczyk) Babula. He attended Adams schools, and graduated from the former Adams High School in 1947. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Southeastern Massachusetts University, and took graduate level courses at Westfield and Fitchburg State Colleges, and the former North Adams State College, and had taken several courses in welding, machine shop, and woodworking. Mr. Babula served with the US Army during the Korean Conflict . He first worked at the former Berkshire Hathaway Mill in Adams, where he was in charge of machinery and building maintenance and was plant superintendent, until the mill was liquidated in 1968. He also worked as supervisor of the maintenance department at the former Budd Co. Paper Mill in Adams for several years. He became an instructor of Plant Maintenance at C.H. McCann Vocational Technical High School in North Adams in 1964, when that program was first being developed, and continued there until his retirement in 1990. He was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams, where he served as a lector. He was a member of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Society and the Adams Lodge of Elks. He was a former Adams Town Meeting member, and had served on the Adams Planning Board. He enjoyed coin and stamp collecting, and woodworking. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, the former Elaine J. Kleiner, whom he married on September 3, 1956; 2 Sons - James Babula and his wife, Deanna, of Augusta, Georgia, and Robert Babula and his wife, Dawn, of New Braunfels, Texas; 1 Daughter - Ann Lenkowski and her husband, Paul, of Northampton, MA; 1 Brother - Chester Babula of North Adams, MA; 5 Grandchildren - Ryan and Megan Babula of Augusta, Georgia; Tyler and Nicole Babula of New Braunfels, Texas, and Seth Berti of Northampton, MA; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces & grandnephews. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, September 13, at 9:00 AM from the AUGE-PACIOREK-SIMMONS Funeral Home, 13 Hoosac St. Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams, celebrated by Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, Pastor of the Catholic Parishes of Adams. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours are Monday, Sept. 12, from 4 to 7 PM at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society through the funeral home.
