Mrs. Helen Cecilia (Gwozdz) Armata, 88, of 59 East St., Adams, died Monday February 5, 2007, at the North Adams Regional Hospital. Death followed a long illness. She was born in Adams on December 23, 1918, a daughter of the late Piotr and Bronislawa (Banas) Gwozdz. She attended schools in Adams, including St. Stanislaus Kostka School and graduated from the former Adams High School with the class of 1934. She then received her Bachelor of Science in Education from the former North Adams State College in 1939. Mrs. Armata was an elementary school teacher in the Adams-Cheshire Regional School District in the 1940's and mid 1960's, and specialized in special needs students in the 1970's, until her retirement in 1979. She was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams. She was also a member of the St. Stanislaus Rosary Sodality, the St. Cecilia's Choir, the TMTM club, and the NEA Teachers Association. She was an avid reader and loved dancing and music. She had been involved in many theatrical productions at college and in her church. She is survived by her husband Roman J. Armata whom she married on April 23, 1946. The celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past spring. 5 Daughters - Mary Roy and her husband Glenn of Windsor, Christine Moyer and her husband John of Adams, Theresa Armata of Bennington, and Bernadette and Barbara Armata of Adams. 1 Son - Joseph R. Armata of Pittsburg, PA. 2 Sisters - Virginia Maguire of Pittsfield, and Joan Bodzioch and her husband Anthony of North Kingston, RI. 5 Grandchildren - Jennifer Leighfield and her husband Jed, Daniel Roy and his wife Tristin, and John, Luke, and Seth Moyer, and several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by 4 sisters - Mary Davies, Felicia Gwozdz, Kazmiera Murphy, and Cecilia Olsztyn, and by 2 brothers - Stanley and Joseph Gwozdz. She was also predeceased by a grandson Erik Roy. The funeral will be held on Thursday February 8, at 9:00AM from the PACIOREK Funeral Home, 13 Hoosac St., Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours are Wednesday from 5:00PM to 7:00PM at the funeral home. Members of the St. Stanislaus Rosary Sodality will meet at 4:40PM at the funeral home to recite the rosary. Memorial donations may be made to the Adams Ambulance Service, the VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire, or St. Stanislaus Kostka Church.
