Mr. Clement G. St. Hilaire

April 25, 1923 - December 14, 2020

Mr. Clement G. St. Hilaire, 97, of Adams, died Monday morning, December 14, 2020 at his home, with family at his side. He was born in Adams on April 25, 1923, a son of the late William and Lillian (Paradis) St. Hilaire. He attended Notre Dame Elementary School in Adams, and graduated from the former St. Joseph’s High School, North Adams. He then attended Assumption College. Clem was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the US Army in the 36th Infantry Division in Africa and Europe as a heavy machine gunner. He was wounded in combat, and received the Purple Heart, Silver Star and Bronze Star Medals. He was Honorably Discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1945. Upon his return and recovery, he worked as a substitute mail carrier and interior decorator, until going to work as a custodian for the Adams-Cheshire Regional School District, retiring after 30 years of service. He then worked for the former Adams Rest Home and Greylock Apartments for several years. He was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Cheshire. He was a member, for over 70 years, of Adams Post 160 American Legion, where he was a Past Commander and Past Secretary; Past District Commander for the American Legion; a member of Disabled American Veterans, the Adams Senior Citizens and the Sacred Heart League. He was Past Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 38; and was a 4th Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus. His wife, the former Eunice M. LeGrand, whom he married on January 12, 1946, died on February 18, 2015. He is survived by his daughter, Jeanne Marie Cooper and her husband, David, of Pittsfield; three grandchildren, including Amy Baker and her husband, Steve; Wendy Siekierski and her husband, Stan; and Seth Cooper and his wife, Stacy; eight great grandchildren, including Chris, Sarah, Elizabeth, Alicia, Amanda, Matt, Cameron and Joshua, six great great grandchildren, including Jazzmyn, Dominic, Kendall, Hailey, Maverick and Jacob; two sisters, Doris Rougeau of Adams, and Gabrielle Downey of Pittsfield; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, William and Vincent St. Hilaire, and by his sisters, Roma Tanguay, Phyllis Kirch, Sr. Patricia St. Hilaire, and Rita Rose. Funeral services and burial will be private. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
