Aloysius Michalenko, 71, of 164 North Summer St. Adams, died Sunday afternoon at North Adams Regional Hospital, shortly after being admitted. He was born in Adams on June 14, 1933, a son of the late John and Victoria (Betleja) Michalenko, and attended Adams schools. He graduated from the former Adams High School in 1951, and attended Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. for 3 years. Mr. Michalenko worked as a custodian at C.H. McCann Technical High School in North Adams for 22 years, until retiring in 1999. Earlier, he worked with his late brother in the operation of Adams Specialty & Printing Co. in Adams for several years. He was Scoutmaster for over 50 years of former Troop 56 of the Boy Scouts of America, in Adams, and was also the leader of its Explorer posts. He conducted their recycling drives for many years, and was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award given by Boy Scouts of America. He was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams, and a member and Past President of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Society. He had worked to create the national Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Stockbridge. He was an Adams Town Meeting member for many years, and was an organizer of the former Youth Haven on Park St. in Adams. He enjoyed spending time at his camp on Windsor Pond in Windsor, MA He is survived by his wife, the former Cecelia B. Biros, whom he married on April 8, 1961; 3 Sons - Lawrence Michalenko of Savoy; Michael Michalenko of Adams; and Peter Michalenko of Savoy; 6 Grandchildren - Nicholas, Emily, Alex and Hailey Michalenko, all of Savoy; and Ryan and Nathan Michalenko both of Adams; 3 Brothers - Rev. Seraphim Michalenko, MIC, of the Congregation of Marian Fathers in Stockbridge, MA; Rev. Alexei Michalenko, Chaplain of Georgetown University School of Law in Washington, D.C., and Joseph Michalenko of Moon Township, PA; 2 Sisters - Sr. Sophia Michalenko and Sr. Victoria Michalenko, both of the Community of the Mother of the God of Tenderness, Danbury, CT; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces & grandnephews. He was predeceased by 4 brothers- Frank, Adolph, Ignatius and John Michalenko, and by a sister, Mrs. Mary Adamczyk. The funeral will be held on Thursday, January 20th, at 9:00 AM from the Auge`-Paciorek-Simmons Funeral Home, 13 Hoosac St. Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams, celebrated by his brothers, Rev. Seraphim Michalenko MIC and Rev. Alexei Michalenko. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours are Wednesday from 5 to 8 PM at the Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the Marian Fathers in Stockbridge, MA or to the Community of the Mother of the God of Tenderness, through the funeral home.
