Philip E. Austin

Mr. Philip E. Austin, 85, of 42 Grove St. Adams, died on Thursday July 19, 2007, at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility in Pittsfield. He was born in Woodstock, Vermont on November 5, 1921, the son of Harold and Ethel (Perkins) Austin. He first attended a one room schoolhouse, and later graduated from Woodstock High School with the Class of 1939. He then graduated from the Vermont School of Agriculture in 1940. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the US Army. Mr. Austin worked in farming until 1954, when he changed careers and went to work at the former Warren Wire Co. in Pownal, VT for six years. He then became a letter carrier for the US Postal Service from the Adams Post Office for 15 years, until retiring. Following his retirement, he worked part-time as a school bus driver for the former E.W. DeGere Transportation Co. in Adams, and later, for Dufour Bus Co. in Adams, until finally retiring in 1993. He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Adams. He was a member of the National Association of retired Federal Employees. An avid motorcyclist, Mr. Austin rode over 100,000 miles, including a cross-country trip to California. He was also a faithful donor to the American Red Cross Blood Drives, donating more than 18 gallons. His wife, the former Doris E. Langer, whom he married on August 21, 1954, died on October 29, 1999 after 45 years of marriage. He is survived by 1 Daughter - Claudia Austin Curry and her husband Gary of Pittsfield; 2 Sons - Dr. Paul D. Austin, DC and his wife Amy of Louisville, Colorado, and Timothy "Scott" Austin of New York, N.Y.; 4 Grandchildren - Matthew and Jeffrey Curry of Pittsfield, and Emily and Kevin Austin of CO. 4 Brothers - Harvey and David Austin of CO, Kenneth Austin of VT, and Robert Cushing of MA. 3 Sisters - Margaret Berry of MA, Bettie Crandall of CA, and Ellen Moyer of VT, and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces & grandnephews. A Requiem Eucharist will be held on Sunday July 22, at 1:00PM in St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Rt. 8, Adams, celebrated by Rev. R. Ellen White, priest-in-charge. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to the Talking Book Library at Perkins School for the Blind, 175 North Beacon St. Watertown, MA 02472. The PACIOREK FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St, Adams, is in charge of arrangements.
