Josephine M. Dubis

Josephine Mary (Gorney) Dubis, 95, passed away on Thursday, November 1st in Pittsfield. A lifelong resident of the Berkshires, Josephine was born in Pittsfield to John and Katherine (Albrycht) Gorney on February 14, 1917. Josephine married her beloved husband Stephen Dubis on April 16, 1934 and moved to Adams, where she was an active member of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. Josephine lost her husband to a long battle with cancer on December 3,1969. Josephine was fiercely independent and no stranger to hard work. She left school at the age 14 to accept a job as a mother's help with a family of seven children in order to help her family during the depression. She moved to Adams after her marriage and was a homemaker who worked periodically at the Berkshire Mills. She was a wonderful baker, well known for her apple pies. After her husband's death, she worked in the cafeteria at Hoosac Valley High School until her retirement. A loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, Josephine is survived by her daughter, Barbara Dubis Merino-Mayper of Corinth, Texas; her sisters, Irene Ropelewski of Pittsfield and Sophie Kinnas of Cheshire; her grandchildren, Catherine Merino Reisman of Haddonfield, New Jersey, Anthony Dubis Merino of Lewisville, Texas, and Dominic J. Merino and his wife Martha of Friendswood, Texas; and seven much-loved great-grandchildren, Jacob, Joseph, and Jackson Reisman of Haddonfield, New Jersey and D.J., Natalie, Julia and Mary Catherine Merino of Friendswood, Texas. She also is survived by 23 nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Josephine was pre-deceased by her brothers Walter, Stanley and Benjamin Gorney, her sister Helen Piekos, and her sons-in-law James Merino and Alan Mayper. The funeral will be held on Monday, Nov. 5th, at 12:00 PM from the PACIOREK FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St. Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 1:00 PM in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams, celebrated by Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, Pastor of the Parish of Blessed John Paul. Burial will follow in st. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday evening from 7 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home. Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made in Josephine's memory to Elder Services of Berkshire County, 66 Wendell Avenue, Pittsfield MA 01201 or Hospice Care in the Berkshires, 269 South Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
